What’s my grade?

This week I noticed students inquiring about their grade in class. When this happened immediately thought that they cared about the grade overall; i.e. what they did to earn such a grade, the time it took me to check the work for accuracy, and the skills they acquired subsequent to the assignment and grading.

This, however, was not the case. Some of my students completed the work just for the grade. Because this particular class is MS Word certification, I want the students to remember specific skills in an attempt to use them for future projects. Some the of the students didn’t and don’t. So why do the assignment? Where is your skill? Where is your mastery?

I have written about intrinsic motivation in a previous post but where is theirs?
